LEAVING CERT 2012 - GEOGRAPHICAL INVESTIGATION
You should have your draft report booklet completed by Friday November 12th. I will be collecting them on this date. Late submissions will not be marked. Make sure to include all diagrams of instruments used/sketches and graphic presentation of results. You do not need to go to any trouble colouring graphs/sketches - this can be done in the official Take a good look at the past exam questions in this section. Remember it is an essay style answer that is required here.
Look at each question and formulate a template of key notes. Deal with each question under Three Aspects. For each aspect, make out 8 Relevant SRP's. Inclue relevant examples/case studies in your answer. I gave a sample template like this to those of you who were in class last week. We are currently revising the Regional Section. Make sure you carefully study the types of questions that have come up in the previous years. You will almost certainly be required to draw a sketch map in part A of at least one of the questions, so prepare a sketch for Irish Regions, One of the European Regions and India.
Parts B and C will be 30 mark questions which you will need to do in aprx. 15 mins. Look carefully at the key words in the question. hat exactly is required? How many faqctors? Which type of region? Make sure you refer o relevant examples in these answers - ie case studies. We will have an exam type question to do in 35 mins next Tuesday in class. We will be working on this in class over the next couple of weeks. We will not be allocating class time after April 1st for this work. There is a page on this site dealing specifically with the GI. It has a copy of the Powerpoint presentation used in class which will help in filling out the report booklet.

When we return to school, we will be looking at the remainder of the Option on Geocology. We will be studying a Biome - The Desert Biome. When we have completed this in about 6-7 class periods, we will then start to write-up the finished submission for the Geographical Investigation. We will be doing this in class.
Make sure you have all of your notes/worksheets/maps/Draft of your report. You will need rulers/colouring pencils etc. for completion of sketches and graphs so please be prepared. This will take aprx. 8-10 periods. It is worth 20% of your overall mark so well worth doing correctly. When we have completed the reports it will then be time to revise the Core Section of the paper - Physical and Regional. We aim to have most of this done by the Easter Break. All students in the class have declared for the Higher Level paper for the mocks. The exam is 2hrs and 50 minutes in duration. You will need all of the allocated time. Do not omit any parts of any question. Make sure you revise the section on Maps and Aerial photographs as some sections on the Core and Elective may require you to use your skills in these.
Read all parts of all questions very carefully. Remember what the person marking the questions will be looking for. Plenty of detail and reference to relevant examples required. This is the option question and is worth 80 marks in the exam. You are required to write an essay style answer consisting of 3-4 paragraphs on the topic. Each paragraph should be on a specific theme related to the topic. You should clearly attempt to include as many relavent examples as you can which will enhance your answer.
There are some files on the first section of this option which we have recently covered in class- Soil Formation/Characteristics/Factors affecting Soil/Soil Types. A typical example of a question in this section is question 18 from last year's paper: 'Describe and explain the characteristics of any one soil type you have studied' Focus on revising the physical section of the course during the Christmas Holidays. The relevant chapters are: chapters 1-17. There are plenty of power point presentations in the Physical section of this site to help with your revision. It may also be helpful if you look at the past exam questions in this section - faniliarise yourself with these and especially the way in which questions are asked.
There is a complete file in the Drop Down on the 2009 Exam with the types of solutions that would help get you high marks. Even if you decide to do Ordinary Level, these will be of help to you as much of the content is the same on both courses. Again, look at the physical section here. Also, go back over chapters 37-38 which are on maps and photographs. These can come up in bothe the physical and the Elective (Questions 7-12 on the paper) www.examinations.ie will get you all of the past exam papers and some of the maps/photographs |
